What is walking football?
- A slower-paced version of football for all adults, suitable for those recovering from illness or looking to stay active.
- No running!
- Usually played on smaller pitches about the size of a tennis court, commonly used by five-a-side teams.
- No physical contact, such as tackling from behind, allowed.
- The ball cannot travel above shoulder height (waist height in the case of TLH Kicking Cancer). No heading of the ball allowed.
- In addition, we have the “three-touch rule”. A player has to pass the ball after three touches. This makes play more inclusive, encouraging teamwork and movement.
Stories of Triumph on the Field

Here are pictures from previous events held by TLH Kicking Cancer, including matches at the Millwall and Arsenal sports hubs, with teams from London and the Midlands.
In the Midlands, our teams play roughly once a month at rotating venues, with a 50 per cent win rate!
But it is not just on the pitch that we get together – there is plenty of social interaction as well. In London, our main gathering place is at Marlborough Sports Garden, where we play every Tuesday.
Each year the Bankside Open Spaces Trust (BOST), which kindly provides us with the Marlborough facilities, organises a festival for community organisations like ours, and walking football is very much one of the activities.

Football tournament
On Saturday 7th March 2026, TLH Kicking Cancer held a Walking Football Tournament at The Lions’ Centre, Millwall Community Trust, to honour and remember Tony Linforth-Hall.
Tony founded the walking football team, Pride of Lions, and sadly passed away on 14th July 2023. In his memory, TLH Kicking Cancer was established to continue Tony’s spirit of kindness, friendship, and community by supporting people and families facing cancer.
The tournament brought together eight fantastic teams and was kindly hosted by Millwall Community Trust. It was a very special occasion, uniting the walking football community to support an important cause.
This year’s tournament was dedicated to raising funds for Mike Allen, from Pimlico Old Burgundians, who is courageously battling leukaemia and currently undergoing treatment. The solidarity, generosity, and support demonstrated by all involved were truly moving.
A heartfelt thanks goes to all teams who participated, to the players who contributed to the team entrance fee of £50, and to walking footballers who were unable to play but offered their support in
other ways. Special thanks are extended to everyone who helped organise the event and to Millwall for hosting. The contributions of all involved made the day a remarkable success.
Following the tournament, TLH Kicking Cancer had the pleasure of presenting Mike Allen and his wife with a cheque for £685, raised entirely through the event. The impact of the community’s efforts was evident and deeply appreciated.
The tournament reflected these values perfectly, as participants came together to play the game he loved while supporting a cause that continues to embody his spirit. Tony’s love for football and for people continues to inspire all TLH Kicking Cancer, and through the charity, his kindness and legacy continue to bring people together and help others.
